Welcome to the seminar course, Distributed Search Engines.

Description:

We cover topics in distributed search engines. Students taking this course will learn how they are designed and implemented. Prerequisites of this course are a mature knowledge of basic computer science, information systems, programming, and, particularly, the ability to conduct independent research. Instructor permit is required to register for this course.

Course Structure and Workload:

Each session will consist of student and instructor presentations. Presentation topics are paper reviews as well as research progress. Presentations are followed by discussion.

Students who are not presenting must summarize each presentation/paper (one page, max). If the student is not in class, then a summary of the paper can be substituted. Summaries are due the week after a presentation. No late summaries will be accepted.

Students must also prepare a 10-page report by the end of the semester. The report may be a summary of research results, a survey of an area, or the implementation of some system. The topic of the report may be developed with my supervision.

Students will be evaluated by the summaries, class participation, and the report.
